The "why" for the Widow Empowerment Weekend

Carolyn Moor - MWC Founder

Carolyn Moor is a professional residential interior designer, Modern Widows Club 501c3 nonprofit Founding Director and a global leader in social innovation, education and advocacy for widows. The Modern Widows Club mission is to empower widows to thrive. She's spearheading and inspiring a new generation of widows to become empowered mentors, leaders and advocates making a positive impact on local communities globally.

Her professional background includes being a former pediatric nurse, interior designer and Communication Studies from Pace University.

Having been featured in the WSJ, PBS, NPR, Huff Post LIVE, Houston Chronicle, Orlando Sentinel, The Oprah Winfrey Show, OWN, TLC, Growing Bolder and Diane Rehr Show, she's a subject matter expert in bereavement, grief, resilience, growth and empowerment for women facing widowhood.

After being a featured guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2006, she became the 'Go To' girl for numerous widows. Many of which encouraged a lean startup for the first-ever training program focused on mentoring and leadership. Therefore, the grassroots idea for Modern Widows Club was born in 2011 and started in Carolyn's home by mentoring two widows. Today, MWC serves over 25K and have launched 18 national chapters with 43 trained leaders. Carolyn had the honor of speaking at the United Nations during the launch for the 2015 Global Widows Report representing the U.S.

MWC is currently the premier U.S. widow research population serving to understand the dynamic needs of widows for their long-term challenges in key areas. MWC has been featured in The Wall Street Journal as a model for resilience and has generated two empirical studies for the Journal of Financial Service Professionals. Both featuring MWC as a powerful next step after traditional grief services for women in widowhood focused on the principles of leaning into life, building resilience and thriving while making a position impact in society.

Leaning into leadership and building resilience - only parenting with the challenges and blessings

Kansas City local, Tammy Ebright lost her husband David to a sudden heart attack in November of 2012. He was her best friend, life partner, father to her children and crazy love for 24 years; her world changed forever in an instant. Decisions she once made as a team now rest solely on her shoulders, a single parent of two beautiful, bright children (4 & 10 years-old at the time, now 9 and 14). Like with any challenge, the strong not only survive but they find a way to grow and thrive! Even though there have been many health challenges, career challenges and secondary loses, the Ebright family stand united and optimistic for the future, they are Resilient. In early 2015, Tammy was elected co-leader of the Kansas City Modern Widow's Club, an organization she attributes her sense of community and support. Most recently, this mother of two was elected to the National Board of the Modern Widow's Club as their Director of Fundraising, an honor Ebright feels incredibly blessed to take on and be the change she wishes to see. When Tammy isn't mentoring widows, or taking care of her children, she is a full time Mortgage Loan Officer. Tammy has been in the industry for the better part of two decades, working in many different roles up and down the home loan process. She is proud to say she has helped over 3,000 families become homeowners.

"John met Tara, Basil and Levi in October 2014 and they have transformed his life in the most miraculous way. 2015 was a banner year involving two huge milestones - their marriage and John adopting Basil and Levi. Their blended family of four boys (8,10,12 and 14) bring an unprecedented level of challenge and joy! Their motto is "It is never too late to live happily ever after." John is keenly aware that, without the Modern Widow's Club and its pivotal role in helping Tara and her boys during the years immediately after Stephen Gidus (Tara's late husband) passed away, the life they now lead would not be possible. John will be eternally grateful to the MWC and for the priceless nature of the healing power this community offers."

Widows, Love, Grief and Money

Dallas, TX ~ Joy D. Kirsch founded Kirsch & Associates in 1990. The company specializes in providing wealth management and transition planning services to clients experiencing Life Changing Events, such as widowhood, retirement, or career changes. She has developed a unique process for delivering these services to her clients called The TruWealth® Process. Using this proprietary, consultative process, she works closely with a team of tax and legal professionals to help clients transition to their new paradigm with confidence.

Joy believes that true wealth is not just a measure of one's financial assets, but the sum of a person's health, wealth, and personal relationships. She has devoted her professional career to helping others define their values, dream new dreams and align their wealth accordingly.

Joy is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER TM, a member of the Sudden Money® Institute, a Certified Grief Recovery Specialist SM, and the co-leader of the Dallas Chapter of Modern Widows Club. She graduated cum laude from the University of Dallas with a bachelor's degree in Economics.

After being widowed for over 20 years, Joy recently walked down the aisle again with a handsome CPA and risk manager named Ron. She is writing the next chapters of her life and they include: a healthy, happy relationship with her man; spending time with good friends and family including her twenty-five talented, beautiful and exceptional nieces and nephews; enjoying her work; and helping other widows to make good financial decisions and move forward with confidence and a sense of purpose. When she is not chained to her desk, she can be found somewhere on a golf course or on her farm in East Texas, usually in her garden or rocking on her front porch and watching the sunset.

How did The Widow's Journey and Joy Kirsch find MWC?

When Carolyn Moor was dreaming about what would become Modern Widows Club, she knew she wanted to create a newsletter that included pertinent topics for widows, like how to navigate through legal and financial matters. Carolyn discovered that Joy Kirsch shared her passion and was already attempting to help widows make good financial decisions through her vocation as a Certified Financial Planner™ and her avocation, the non-profit group, The Widow's Journey in Dallas. Carolyn invited Joy to write a financial article for the MWC newsletter.

Joy has followed the growth of MWC with a sense of awe and appreciation as Carolyn has managed to bring so many of her own hopes and dreams into a reality: a national movement with a blog and videos, providing hope and inspiration to so many women travelling this path. She is honored to merge the two groups and looks forward to the synthesis that will naturally follow.

Panel Discussion: Melissa Wandall and Kimberly Wiggins

Kimberly Holmes Wiggins joined the tender club of widowhood in 2016.

Professionally, Kimberly has a wealth of award-winning, journalism experience. She's currently a morning anchor at WBOC-TV on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Delaware and Virginia. Prior to that position, she reported and anchored at WOFL-TV in Orlando. Before landing in Central Florida, she was the weekend anchor at WXIX-TV in Cincinnati and WBOC-TV in Salisbury, Md. Her career began behind the scenes as an associate producer in Miami and as a field producer at Bloomberg TV in their Washington, D.C. bureau. Kimberly graduated from Duke University and Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism.

She lost her soulmate at the age of 35. Kimberly & Rasheed met at Duke University. The two dated for seven years after college (all long distance) and were married for nearly five years. They were equally yoked and truly bound together by God, however, that physical bond was broken when Kimberly's beloved husband was taken from her in a horrific hit and run. Police are still searching for two of the three drivers. She's doing everything in her power to aid that search

Kimberly launched a faith-based, retail and outreach organization with a wister (widow sister) called Still His. They recently formed a partnership with the The Dinner Party, to launch support-based gatherings full of good food, laughter and understanding for widows navigating the waters of significant loss and grief.
